Alternate Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)

We know that your child brings many strengths with them to school, but also may need extra support in the classroom. As an English Learner, your child will take the Alternate English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) field test as listed in their individualized education program, or IEP.

The Alternate ELPAC measures how much progress your child is making in learning English, while using their preferred way of communicating. On this test your child may use sign language, eye gaze, pointing, gestures, alternative communication devices, or other alternate modes to understand and express information. This test will give your child's teacher information about where your child may need extra support.

Your child takes the Alternate ELPAC every fall to measure their progress until they are fluent in English. The school testing schedule is listed below. This year your child will be assessed in November. You are an important part of your child's education. To make sure your child feels comfortable taking the test, you can:

Explain to your child that the test is a tool to help them learn and to not be anxious or scared.
Remind your child that you and their teacher want them to try their very best and are there to help, every step of the way.

Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and breakfast before testing.

ELPAC Parent and Guardian Notification: English Y Español

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), California Science Test (CAST), California Alternate Assessments (CAA)

Assessments help our students, teachers, and parents/guardians know our students’ academic strengths and areas of need. Each year the state of California requires students to take multiple assessments in part to help educators learn more about their students so that they can support them.

Adelanto students in grades 3-8 will take assessments in both Math and English Language Arts. Students in grades 5 and 8 will also take an assessment in Science. Your child will take these assessments between April 11th and May 13th. The data from these assessments will help educators and families identify gaps in knowledge or skills so that your child can get the support need to be successful in school.

Students will be assessed at their school with the exception of students in the Independent Study Program. Students who participate in the Independent Study Program will be assessed virtually. Parents can contact their child’s teacher for more information on how students will log on to the assessments. To make sure that each student receives the most accurate score, we ask that all Independent Study Program students adhere to the following:

Adults may assist your child with setting up the technology used to enter the test session.
To keep the test fair for all students, we ask that you do not talk about the questions on the test or any materials for the test with anyone before, during, or after the test.
No one may record the test, or use a camera or another device to take pictures of the test questions or of your child taking the test. This helps to keep the questions confidential.
We need to know that the test is being completed by your child without any help. To verify compliance, a web camera and microphone will be used to observe your child while taking the test. The camera is only used to observe your child and the surroundings during the test and will not record the session. Students may not have a Zoom background on while taking the test.
Please follow all instructions given by the test administrator or examiner to place the camera where your child and the child's immediate surroundings can be observed.

Students in the Independent Study Program who take the California Alternate Assessments (CAAs) will need to come to the Adelanto Elementary School to be assessed. Your child’s teacher will contact you to make an appointment to do this.

Gifted and Talented Education/Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test

Assessments help our students, teachers, and parents/guardians know our students’ academic strengths and areas of need. They can also help educators determine if children qualify for certain programs, such as our Gifted and Talented Education or GATE Program.

This March, AESD will administer the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, 3rd Edition (NNAT3) to students in grades 2-4 and to students in grades 5-8 based on teacher recommendation and parent/guardian permission. The NNAT3 is a 30-minute online assessment.

Data from this assessment will help educators determine if your child qualifies for our Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program.

Math Diagnostic Placement Test

Assessments help our students, teachers, and parents/guardians know our students’ academic strengths and areas of need. They can also help educators determine which classes our students should take.

This March, AESD will administer the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDPT) to students in Grade 8. The MDPT is an untimed online assessment.

Data from this assessment will help educators determine which Mathematics class your child should take during their first year of high school.
